In a big development that many are interpreting as a mutiny of sorts, Manipur police commandos surrendered their arms today in protest against them not being allowed to retaliate when gunmen attacked the residence of Imphal West Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Amit Moirangthem last evening in Imphal East.

The Police personnel have demanded free hand to retaliate when attacked by armed miscreants.

The decision to go ahead with the arms down came after a crucial meeting at the Imphal West Commando Headquarters this morning. Soon after the Imphal West Commandoes laid down their arms, the Commandoes of Thoubal, Imphal East and Moreh also followed suit.

Earlier, Manipur Police service officers took strong exception to the assault on ASP Moirangthem. He was admitted to a city hospital last evening.

Meanwhile, following the incident, heavy security has been deployed in Imphal, and security arrangements in and around the residence of Moirangthem have been beefed up.

Security deployment was witnessed in Imphal with security forces armed with light machine guns and automatic weapons deployed on the streets of the state capital.

Around 7 pm yesterday, a group of armed men allegedly attacked the house of Moirangthem at Wangkhei in Imphal East firing multiple rounds. 2 civilians were injured in the attack.

According to Moirangthem’s father, Dr M Kulachandra, Moirangthem was not at home during the attack and was dropped at city hopital in Imphal with injury marks on his body by unidentified men later in the evening.

Dr M Kula-chandra said that the armed men forced their way into the compound of their house and started firing.

This, after speculations started doing rounds that ASP Moirangthem has been abducted.

Later, Indian Army and Assam rifles were called to control the volatile situation.

According to reports, who sustained injuries, has been rescued and a case has been registered in this regard.

The State Police is carrying out raids to nab the accused involved, said Manipur security adviser Kuldiep Singh IPS (retd).
