Meghalaya seeks Centre’s support for New Shillong Knowledge City

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday met Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and sought his ministry’s support for the New Shillong Knowledge City at Mawkhanu to be built as a green-field city.

He called on Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri in New Delhi for the approval of the project under the Challenge Fund for Incubation of New Cities.

Taking to X, CM Sangma wrote, “Met with Hon’ble Union Minister for @MoHUA_India, Sh. @HardeepSPuri ji to seek the support of the Ministry in according approval to the proposal to create the New Shillong Knowledge City at Mawkhanu as a green-field city under the Challenge Fund for Incubation of New Cities.”

Earlier, on February 7, Conrad Sangma said that Shillong will soon get a planned administrative city at Mawdiangdiang. Informing this, CM Sangma stated that the New Shillong Township will be worth over Rs 2,500 crore.

“This project is estimated to cost more than Rs 2,500 crore, covering aspects like road connectivity, water supply, and building infrastructure,” he said.

Sangma added that he reviewed the designs of the administrative city and plans to present them to the state Cabinet for approval.

“Once approved, we aim to initiate the tender process after the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are finalised by the end of the second quarter of 2024-2025,” he explained, expressing hope that the government would relocate at least the secretariat portion to the new administrative city within the current term.
