Road, rail blockade in Tripura: Govt in talks…something will happen, says CM Manik Saha

The TISF has decided to go for the blockade after the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) revoked its decision to allow students to write the Kokborok examination in English

While normal life has taken a hit owing to the indefinite road and rail blockade called by the TISF backed by other organisations, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha today informed that the government is in talks (with agitating groups) to find a solution to the deadlock.

However, the Tripura Chief Minister maintained that such protests cannot benefit anyone and that only the common people have to bear the brunt.

Asked about his reaction on the ongoing blockade called with effect from today, CM Saha said, “We have to see, talks are going on, so definitely something will happen. Protesting this way is of no benefit, they have to consider all these aspects. If there is rail blockade, road blockade common people are left in severe distress. I hope that everything will be normal soon.”

On February 9, the Kokborok language row in Tripura escalated to a new high after the Tripura Indigenous Students Federation (TISF) announced an indefinite rail and road blockade with effect from today.
The TISF decided this after the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE)’s move to revoke its decision to allow students to write the Kokborok examination in English or Bengali.

The Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) has also extended its unequivocal support to TISF’s call for the indefinite road and rail blockade.

On February 8, just three days after announcing that students would have the choice to answer in either Bengali or Roman script in the Kokborok examination, TBSE President, Dr. Dhananjoy Gonchowdhury on Thursday reversed his decision regarding the language preference for examination and said that it would be mandatory to answer Kokborak subjects solely in Bengali script.
