Meghalaya: MDA Spokesperson urges VPP to discuss issues in Assembly

Lyngdoh said hitting the streets regularly defeats the purpose of holding elections

Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) Spokesperson and Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh has urged the Voice of People’s Party (VPP) to discuss their issues in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and not to hit the streets frequently as it defeats the very purpose of holding elections to choose public representatives.

Speaking to the media, Lyngdoh said, “The whole purpose of us having an elected house is to fecilitate legislators to debate and take part in discussions. A constituency of 30,000 to 50,000 voters will vote for a candidate expecting him to represent their interests in the house. If I were to take my electors to the streets repeatedly then the whole point of having elections is defeated.”

“Members of opposition are also important members of committees constituted by the state assembly. Even the Public Accounts Committee, which is regarded as a mini assembly, is headed and chaired by an opposition member. Therefore there is adequate rule for opposition to address all their issues within the four walls of the state assembly,” Lyngdoh added.

It maybe noted that the VPP in January took to the streets to protest against the government’s failure to reinstate the sacked Lokayukta officials in the state. They staged a sit-in protest in front of the DC office in Shillong.

Earlier in May, last year the VPP also staged a hunger protest to protest against the roster system in government jobs and asked the government to put all recruitments on hold.
