The Election Commission of India has extended a ban on poll rallies and roadshows until February 11 due to the daily increase in Covid-19 cases in the five poll-bound states.
Physical rallies with a maximum capacity of 1000 people and indoor meetings with a maximum capacity of 500 people were also allowed by the polling body. For the door-to-door campaign, twenty people are allowed.
The election commission made the decision after discussing the Covid situation with the state’s health secretaries and noting the positive rate.
It may be mentioned that the election panel banned physical rallies and roadshows when it released the vote schedule for Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand,
Goa, Punjab, and Manipur on January 8, citing an increase in Covid-19 cases.
The Assembly elections in Goa, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh will be held in seven phases beginning on February 10.
Manipur will go for polls on February 27 and March 3.
The vote counting will take place on March 10.
