Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar expressed confidence at least in some areas of difference of Assam Meghalaya border dispute will be resolved before the 50th Statehood celebration of Meghalaya. Tongkhar is also heading the Regional Committee looking into the border areas of East Khasi Hills attached with Assam.

Tongkhar’s statement comes at a time when Chief Ministers of both states are working in tandem to resolve the long-drawn Assam- Meghalaya border dispute.

On a query if historical facts will be taken into account, Tongkhar added that although other factors are important, the will and ethnicity of people living in the area will be the main criteria in solving the boundary dispute.

When asked about the mutual decision by the two neighbouring states to maintain peace at the border, the cabinet minister added that the Chief Ministers of both the states have taken steps for it and both governments are making sure people residing in the areas are also included in developmental schemes.

Tongkhar’s statement comes right after another Meghalaya Cabinet Minister and Regional committee member for the East Jaintia Hills, Lakhmen Rymbui, commented on the solution of the Assam-Meghalaya border dispute. Rymbui said that due diligence will be done for the benefit of the state and the people with the mutual understanding of both the Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya.
