The Tourism Industry in Sikkim which was slowly limping back to normalcy following the 2020 lockdown has been hit again.

Amid growing concerns over the Omicron variant, the state government on November 30 stopped issuing permits to foreign nationals visiting the state. This has turned into a major cause of concern for tourism stakeholders in the state.

Earlier, last year as well, travel agencies, hoteliers were the ones who faced severe losses during the Covid-19 lockdown. Now with the Omicron threat looming large, stakeholders are apprehensive if they will have to go through the same phase again.

The Sikkim Global Film Festival which was scheduled for 10th and 14th December 2021 was also postponed by the State government due to the Omicron scare.
