The Assam police in Hojai have arrested at least 24 miscreants in less than 24 hours into the gruesome assault case of a doctor named Seuj Kumar Senapati at a government Covid hospital in Lanka near Nagaon.
According to sources, the doctor and some health staff were attacked after a critically ill Covid patient named Gyasuddin succumbed to COVID-19 at Udali Covid Care Centre on Tuesday. The relatives and a group of people known to the victim brutally assaulted the junior doctor.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemning the incident termed it as barbaric and promised justice.
“24 culprits involved in this barbaric attack have been arrested and the charge sheet will be filed at the earliest. I am personally monitoring this investigation and I promise that justice will be served,” he tweeted.
Meanwhile, senior doctors and resident doctors across the state have been staging protest and are demanding justice for the junior doctor.
Doctors at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital(GMCH) staged a protest demanding an inquiry into the incident. They also demanded safety for all the health workers.
The Junior Doctors’ Association of the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) also boycotted all essential services and diagnostic services of the hospital in protests against the brutal assault on a junior doctor in a Covid Care Centre at Hojai in Assam on Monday.
The junior doctors, accompanied by several senior doctors, carrying placards and wearing black badges, staged a protest in front of the casualty ward of the JMCH.
In Bokakhat, doctors and health workers protested wearing black badges on duty. As per reports, the general OPD of the hospital has already been closed as a sign of protest over the incident.
