Simmering tension continues to prevail along the Assam-Mizoram border with the Mizoram police accusing its Assam counterpart of damaging two makeshift camps erected by its personnel on Thursday.

Kolasib Deputy Commissioner H Lalthlangliana said that three makeshift camps were erected at the disputed area by the Mizoram police following mutual agreement between two sides on Wednesday.

The Kolasib DC said that following a magistrate-level meeting between the two sides on Wednesday it was mutually agreed that police personnel from both sides will camp in the area in order to prevent further escalation. As such, the Mizoram police had set up 2-3 makeshift camps in the area. However, it is being alleged that the Assam police damaged at least 2 makeshift camps yesterday leading to fresh tension.

Meanwhile, Kolasib DC Lalthlangliana admitted that although the DC and SP Hailakandi insisted on discussing the border issue during the meeting on Wednesday, officials from the Mizoram side refused to engage in the same citing that a inter-state border dispute is an affair between two states, which requires involvement of higher authorities from both sides.

It may be mentioned that fresh tension erupted in the area earlier this week with Mizoram accusing Assam of encroaching 2.5 km inside its territory, destroying plantations. Police personnel from both sides have been camping side by side in the area of dispute since then.

As per official sources, a chief secretary level meet is scheduled between the states on July 9th on the inter-state border dispute.

Three districts of Mizoram- Aizawl, Kolasib and Mamit share about a 164.6 km long border with Assam’s Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts.
