The first-ever entry-exit point or facilitation centre in Meghalaya was inaugurated on Monday at Umling by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.

The centre will provide facilities such as registration, Covid testing, isolation rooms, VIP and emergency counters, infiltration cells and cafeterias for travellers and tourists visiting the state.

“We inaugurated the entry point as wanted by the people of the state long time back. Today is a red-letter day, where ultimately we are able to inaugurate the entry point for those entering the state,” Tynsong said.

“I request my friends coming from outside the state, please don’t hesitate to visit the beautiful state of Meghalaya,” he added.

Assuring smooth registration for tourists, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the government is looking to set up two more entry points at Bajengdoba in Garo Hills and Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills.

Moreover, construction for facilitation centres at Mendipathar, North Garo Hills and Umroi Airport at Ri Bhoi district will be initiated at the earliest.

Travellers will be required to present their registration and Covid-free certificates at the entry point. For travellers without the necessary documents, mandatory testing will be conducted at the facilitation centre.

However, no payment rather than the fee levied for Covid testing will be charged during the time of registration.

Online registration for people visiting the state on official and business purposes has been provided. Mandatory registration through a tourism app will be required for travellers.

The move comes at a time when Meghalaya is witnessing major protests by civil bodies demanding swift implementation of inner line permit to check influx of illegal immigrants in the state.
