Widespread arson has been reported from Vijoynagar in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district where a protest led by the All Yobin Students Union turned violent leading to the burning of several government properties including the SB and SIB offices, old office of the Extra Assistant Commissioner, the old police station and post office.
As per reports, over 1,000 people from Gandhigram in the outskirts of Vijoynagar town marched over 15 km to the town, where the situation turned violent as the mob set on fire a number of structures.
Additional forces have been flown into the area which continues to be extremely tense.
The protest was staged against the participation of ex-Assam Rifles personnel in the ensuing panchayat polls in the area. The issue has been lingering for over a month with the Yobin Students Union demanding stripping of Panchayati Raj rights to the ex-Assam Rifles men settled in the area.

Meanwhile, Changlang district Deputy Commissioner Debansh Yadav speaking to Northeast Live Editor-in-chief Wasbir Hussain informed that additional forces have been flown into the area.
He further informed that the protest march was carried out defying prohibitory orders of the district administration already in place.
