A husband-wife duo was seriously injured in a bomb explosion on Monday near the gate of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal.

Papao, 40, and his wife Haopi, 34, had come to the hospital from the State’s Kangpokpi district for treatment.

A team of police led by Deputy Inspector general (DIG) Manipur police Themthing Ngashangva rushed to the blast site to take stock of the situation.

Police sources said that shrapnel from a powerful foreign-made bomb that exploded at 9.35 am, injured the couple. The injured couple were rushed to the hospital following the incident, and are said to be out of danger.

Themthing Ngasangva strongly condemning the incident termed it as a cowardly act.

“The blast occurred at a very sensitive area where people come for treatment amid COVID-19. It is a cowardly act. We will catch the culprits soon,” the DIG said.

The motive behind the attack is not yet known. No rebel group has so far claimed responsibility for the blast.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered in connection with the incident.
