Eminent economist Dr. Jayanta Madhab passed away at the age of 91 at Apollo Hospital in Guwahati on Monday. He was suffering from cardiac disease.

A noted scholar, Dr. Madhab graduated in economics from JB College, Jorhat and pursued his masters from Gauhati University. He earned his doctorate degree in financial management from the London School of Economics.

Dr. Madhab served as the first chairman of the North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Limited (NEDFI). He was the economic advisor (2003-2009) to the Government of Assam during the tenure of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

Dr. Madhab also served as the Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoled the demise of Dr. Jayanta Madhab on Twitter, calls it a great loss for the nation.  The renowned economist’s death has been widely mourned across the state.

“Condolences on the demise of noted economist and a former director of Asian Development Bank, Dr. Jayanta Madhab. His death is a great loss for the nation and I offer my prayers for the departed soul,” Sonowal tweeted.
