Two Buddhist monks are pitted against Chief Minister Pema Khandu in Mukto constituency which has virtually seen no polls since 25 years now.
While one of the monks Thupten Kunphen will contest from a Congress ticket, the JD(S) has given ticket to another monk Lobsang Gyatso to take on chief minister Pema Khandu in his home turf.
Mukto has been the stronghold of the Khandu family and even the incumbent chief minister has been elected unopposed from the constituency since 2011, following the death of his father and former Arunachal CM Dorjee Khandu.
While Congress candidate Thupten Kunphen has served as an abbot of Gontse Gaden Rabgye Ling monastery and president of Buddhist culture preservation society, Lobsang Gyatse of the JD(S), popularly known as Anna Lama is an anti-dam activist and former general secretary of Save Mon Region Federation.
