The 600-year-old historic Chakzam bridge over the Tawang river, built by a disciple of the first Dalai Lama Thang Tong Gylapo is in a sorry state of affairs as it is facing plunder and loot by antique collectors and burglars.

Over 40 pieces of iron chains fastened to the bridge were reported missing on July 8 by one of its caretakers. Pema Tsewng, caretaker of the rare piece of antique, said the government authorities need to take concrete steps for its round the clock surveillance.

Terming the act of theft unfortunate, Member of the District Congress Committee of Tawang, Sangey Phuntsok Nguimo appealed to the district administration, MLAs of the Tawang District, Chief Minister Pema Khandu and minister of state for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju to initiate adequate security measures for its protection.
