Opposing Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s proposed move to issue work permits to Bangladeshi nationals to work in the state, the Congress today began protests.

Earlier, on Thursday former Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma while seeking people’s support to the protest had vowed that the party will ensure that the state government is not allowed to adopt the idea that will have far reaching ramifications in the state.

The Meghalaya chief minister, who met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj recently, put forward the idea that work permits be issued to Bangladeshis, while restricting them from taking part in the democratic process of voting.

Conrad’s proposal to the External Affairs Minister had earlier drawn flak from various quarters with students boides from within Meghalaya. The move also did not find many takers in political circles.

The Meghalaya chief minister had clarified that the idea was mooted to tackle illegal migration and that it was one of the several proposals put forward by him.
