In the wake of the increasing rape incidents in Assam, the state government today launched a 24*7 helpline number for women. The helpline number 181 has been launched with the objective of providing 24×7 immediate response to women in distress.

The helpline number will also provide legal aid, counseling and guidance to women facing violence using integrated services. It will also act as a platform for networking between various governmental and non-governmental agencies to provide link with support systems that will facilitate the rehabilitation of women who need care and protection.The helpline will be available from 9am to 5:30pm now and after 2 months it will be made 24×7.

Speaking during the launch of the 24*7 helpline service Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said it is the duty of the state to protect the women. He added that anybody found guilty of committing crime against women will be dealt with sternly.

He further said that he wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court to come up with a fast track court to deal with these kind of cases swiftly. The government will be more vigilant, he assured.
