Central committee of Young Mizo Association (YMA) has urged Mizoram officials authorized to issue birth certificates, residential certificates, scheduled tribe certificates and voter identity cards to issue such documents only to bona fide residents of Mizoram and Indian citizens.
The press statement issued by the central committee of the YMA appealed to all the officials to take extreme care in issuing such important documents.
The YMA statement came in the wake of revelation of allegations that Myanmar-born singer Benjamin Sum purchased a motorcycle and registered in his name despite being a refugee and a Myanmar national.
Sum rose to stardom after taking shelter in the state in the aftermath of the military coup d’etat in Myanmar in early 2021.
It turned out that Sum got Aadhaar card, voter ID, Driving License and even a Mizoram birth certificate (as born in Myanmar border Farkawn village) and garage clearance from the local council of the locality in Aizawl where he temporarily resides. To own a vehicle in Aizawl, one has to have a garage (his own or rented).
The central committee of the YMA also asked all the refugees taking refuge in the state to live peacefully as they fled their country due to fear of persecution.
“We appeal to the people of Mizoram not to do anything to endanger the integrity of all the ethnic Zo people and not to spread anything in the media that can harm the unity of the Zo people,” the statement said.
It also appealed to the people to keep alive the brotherhood of all the Zo ethnic people, no matter where they are.
