A wreath laying ceremony was conducted on the occasion of the Armed Forces Veterans’ Day at the Gajraj War Memorial in Tezpur on Tuesday.

Ex-servicemen who have settled down in and around Tezpur post retirement participated in the event.

Capt Mukul Kumar Das (Retd), the senior most veteran at the occasion commenced proceedings by laying the first wreath. A total of 200 personnel attended the event.

The Core commander exhorted all ranks to stay committed towards the welfare of the veterans, who are the bedrock of the Army and the Regimental System.

The Armed Force Veterans’ Day is celebrated with full military fervor and gaiety on the 14th of January every year to commemorate the selfless devotion and sacrifice of our Veterans who laid down their lives in the defence of the nation.

The day is also commemorated as a mark of respect to and in recognition of the services rendered by Field Marshal KM Cariappa, OBE, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.

He led the Indian Forces to victory in the war of 1948, became the Commander-in-Chief on 15 Jan 1949 and retired on 14 Jan 1953.

Furthermore, the event also aims to strengthen the bond between serving personnel and Veterans.
