There is not much clarity about what the World Meetei Council (WMC) is, and there has been some leadership crisis in the WMC in July this year, according to local media reports. But the World Meetei Council is currently in the news as it has demanded the replacement of N Biren Singh as Chief Minister of Manipur. In a letter submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi titled, ‘Manipur Deserves a Responsible Government’, the WMC condemned the present leadership in Manipur for its utter failure to govern effectively and said this has plunged the state into utter chaos. The current situation has paralysed the state and the people are in a state of confusion and distress. In a democratic framework, accountability lies with the head of the government. But till date, neither the Chief Minister nor anyone else has taken responsibility for the chaos that has plagued the state, the Council said in the letter as quoted in local media reports.
