On May 10 one Bihari Karmakar was killed in wild elephant attack in the Bhumihin Colony village.
Hundreds of villagers including women and children blocked the National Highway 8, considered to be the lifeline of Tripura connecting it with neighbouring Assam, for hours demanding the safety of their lives and properties from attacks of wild elephants.
At least four persons were reportedly killed besides several houses and large areas of crops destroyed in wild elephant attacks in Bhumihin Colony under the Teliamura sub-division of Khowai district in Tripura this year.
On Saturday, agitated villagers, the majority of them from tribal sections who are daily laborers, blocked the national highway demanding the forest authority take necessary initiatives so that they get relief from this daily suffering.
The protesters complained that almost on a regular basis there are reports of wild elephant attacks in the village especially during the night hours but despite repeatedly informing the forest officials for help they give a deaf ear.
Police from Teliamura intervened and after more than an hour of discussion and with the assurance of the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) to visit their village on Monday the agitators agreed to live the blockade.
