India on Wednesday registered its biggest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases with 8,909 more cases reported in the last 24 hours.

The country’s overall tally has climbed to 2,07,615, while the death toll surged to 5,815 according to the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry. India breached the 2-lakh mark on Tuesday evening.

This is the highest single-day jump in both coronavirus cases and fatalities in India in a day.

The number of active COVID-19 cases has reached 1,01,497 and number of patients who have been cured/discharged now stands at 1,00,302.

Of all the states, Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of coronavirus cases with 72,300 patients. At 24,586 cases, Tamil Nadu follows Maharashtra in terms of total coronavirus cases.

On Tuesday, India recorded 8,171 COVID-19 cases and 204 deaths, taking the country’s tally to 1,98,706.
