Responding to the recent encounter between the Assam Police and ULFA-Independent cadres at Pengeri in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said that the police have been on a constant mission to combat extortion activities by the ULFA-I cadres.
Mahanta also appealed to the people living in areas prone to such encounters to be alert at all times. He further assured that the police will not lower their guards.
On the other hand, the DGP also spoke on the probabilities of jihadi modules operating in lower Assam.
Speaking to Northeast Live, DGP Mahanta clarified that the modules which were busted in the recent months were in their preparatory stages.
He added that several modules were busted in other states such as Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal, all of which have connections with those nabbed in Assam.
Further, DGP Mahanta also did not rule out the possibility of terror modules based in neighboring Bangladesh have some linkages in Assam.
He affirmed that the Assam Police is in constant touch with the Bangladesh government in this regard, and at the same time, keeping a strict vigil in spotting suspicious persons who eventually may threaten the state’s law and order situation.
