Post-monsoon maintenance work is being carried on the airport's both runways – RWY 09/27 and RWY 14/32
The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai is temporarily closed for 6 hours till 5 pm today due to post-monsoon maintenance work on its two runways.
Post-monsoon maintenance work is being carried on the airport’s both runways – RWY 09/27 and RWY 14/32.
The airport authority said that to “effectively schedule flights to ensure smooth completion of the maintenance,” it has coordinated with all relevant parties. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued to the airlines and other stakeholders 6 months in advance.
What kind of maintenance work is it?
Maintenance works are part of the yearly post-monsoon preventive maintenance plan. Examining the runway surface for possible wear and tear that may have happened in the previous six months is part of this. Ensuring safe and effective flying operations is the aim.
On May 2, the airport completed its pre-monsoon maintenance and repairs on both runways.
According to authorities, the major reason for the temporary closure is to carry out necessary repairs and maintenance in order to maintain the airport’s infrastructure to the greatest standards.
Passengers requested assistance
Every day, the airport handles nearly 900 travellers. Therefore, the officials at the airport have asked travellers to cooperate with the efforts.
In the recent month, domestic air traffic at the airport reached 108 % of the pre-pandemic level in August 2019.
During the same time period, the airport handled 6,960 international flights and 20,711 domestic flights.
