Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s wife Kaisa Rio today inaugurated the screening of the documentary film ‘Where Cotton Flowers Grow’ that showcases the rich heritage of Naga textiles.
She also inaugurated a Mini Exhibition-cum-Sale at the Directorate of Art and Culture in Kohima.
During her speech, Kaisa Rio highlighted the enduring importance of cotton, an ancient material that has played a vital role in human history. She expressed her gratitude to the Department for their support in encouraging and promoting Naga textile entrepreneurs and providing a platform for their work.
Sesino Yhoshu, representing TakeOne Production House, shared insights about the documentary film ‘Where Cotton Flowers Grow.’ The film focuses on four Khiamniungan women from Sanglao Village in Noklak District who are dedicated to keeping the craft of textile making alive.
The documentary is an initiative of the Exotic Echo Society, produced by TakeOne Production House, and received financial support from the Department of Art & Culture, with logistical assistance from the Noklak District Administration.
Athel O. Lotha, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary of Art and Culture, emphasized the significance of traditional arts and crafts in Naga culture. She lamented the decline of traditional textile-making processes, from sourcing raw materials to weaving and dyeing, which are now at risk of becoming extinct. She noted that only a few elders in remote areas still practice these indigenous techniques.
The Mini Exhibition-cum-Sale featured a display of authentic indigenous textiles and crafts, showcasing the talent, diversity, and richness of local artisans. The event is expected to raise awareness about the importance of preserving and promoting this valuable heritage.
