Several houses and vehicles were damaged because of the pipeline burst
Yet again, people of Kharghuli in Guwahati on Thursday, had to bear the brunt of a major water pipeline burst once again causing extensive damage to several houses, business establishments, and vehicles.
Water ejected at a massive force and burst out to over 20 feet, triggering panic as it brought back memories of May 2023 when a similar pipeline burst in the same locality had left one woman dead and many others injured.
Today’s incident is the third such incident in 3 years, the second incident happened on July 2023 in the Zoo Tinali area damaging houses and business establishments in the area.
As per inputs, the incident occurred around 10:15 am, which has caused extensive damage to over 5 homes, vehicles, and multiple business establishments, leaving residents grappling with inundated streets, disrupting daily life.
The pipeline was being maintained by the JICA.
Soon after the incident Urban Development Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro, Pallab Jha and other top officials rushed to the spot.
While speaking to the media, Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said, “Initial findings indicate that the pipeline burst due to a pressure increase. Earlier, experts suggest to set up a surge protection tank, which was implemented and set to begin operations tomorrow. Regretfully, this occurrence happened during the preparatory phase. We have notified the Chief Minister about the situation. We are probing the technical aspects of this incident.”
“However, our experts are working on it and let me assure you that the government is looking into it”, he added.
Later, taking to social media, Baruah further said, “I visited the spot today to take stock of the details of the pipe explosion incident of the Water Supply Scheme in Kharghuli and also discussed the temporary situation and future course of action with the concerned authorities, local people and the media.”
“I would like to reiterate through social media that we will be ready to investigate this incident in a scientific manner and take remedial measures and we will be ready to deal with such situations in future. In addition, we directed the district administration to take stock of the damage caused in the incident and provide proper compensation to the affected people at the earliest”, he added.
Following the incident, the Guwahati Jal Board (GJB) announced that the water supply would be temporarily halted from tomorrow (January 3) in certain areas of the city to facilitate the installation and testing of the surge protection system, critical for stabilizing the city’s water infrastructure. Affected areas include Kharghuli, Latasil, Silphukhuri, Amiya Nagar, Chandmari, Lachit Nagar, Chitrachal Path, Nijarapar, Athgaon, Kumarpara and other areas as well.
