Large number of Village Defence Force (VDF) on Saturday afternoon took out a mass protest rally demanding salary hike, in Imphal.
Hundreds of VDF personnel in uniform, seizing their normal duties took out a mass rally pushing their long standing demand of salary hike.
The rally was stopped by state police force, triggering a massive stand-off which later turned into violent clash between police and agitating VDF personnel.
Agitating VDF pelted stones towards police and and the cops resorted to lathicharge and firing tear gas shells resulting in injury to at least 5 striking V D F members.
It may be mentioned that VDF was first established in the year 2009 in Thoubal district of Manipur to utilize in counter insurgency operation or to assist security forces while carrying out counter insurgency operation in far flung villages in the state during the O Ibobi Singh led congress government.
Later it was expanded by recruiting from each districts in Manipur. At present the strength of VDF in Manipur is 10, 500.
