The first phase of Assembly Elections in the state of Uttar Pradesh began today. Elections are being held in a total of 58 constituencies across 11 districts in the western part of the state.
The state recorded a voter turnout of 48.24 percent till 3 pm.
As many as 623 candidates are in the fray with 2.27 crore people eligible to vote in this phase.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed an election rally in UP’s Saharanpur.

Addressing the rally, PM Modi said that the State government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has consistently worked to prevent crimes against Muslim women, while the opposition has stood in the way of their progress for the sake of votes.
The alliance of the Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal is the main challenger to the incumbent BJP in the region.
This time, the BSP and the Congress are fighting it alone. The next round of polling in the state is scheduled to be held on 14 February.
Elections in Uttar Pradesh are scheduled to be held in seven phases. The last date of polling is on 7 March.The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
