Economic crisis & co-education reason behind closure of Universities in Afghanistan: Taliban

Abdul Baqi Haqqani, acting minister of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan on Sunday said that co-education in Afghanistan’s universities, as well as the economic crisis, is a major reason behind the closure of universities.

High schools for girls and Public universities are yet to reopen in Afghanistan after the Taliban took over the country.

Taliban effectively banned co-education after recapturing the country and directed that girls will no longer be allowed to sit with boys in educational institutes.

Abdul Baqi Haqqani said that the government will have to construct separate classes for girls and hire extra lecturers that require more time and money.

The acting minister of higher education, who recently returned from Pakistan, stated that he was there on an official visit and met with Pakistani officials and relevant administrations to discuss the issues of Afghan students.

No country will be allowed to grant scholarships directly to people and that the scholarships will be administered through the ministry of higher education, added Haqqani.

Moreover, the Taliban stated that women must be accompanied by a close male relative if they want to travel long distances.

In its guidance, the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice advised vehicle owners to refuse rides to women who were not wearing headscarves, initiating condemnation from human rights activists.

It may be mentioned that earlier, the ministry asked Afghan television channels to stop airing dramas and soap operas starring female actors. It also called on female TV journalists to wear headscarves while presenting.
