Union Minister of Ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday said that he is committed to transform Brahmaputra into a major waterway.
Noting that several projects along river Brahmaputra are in the pipeline, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal exuded confidence that business prospects in the northeast region will improve with the development of waterways.
Sonowal who is on his first visit to Assam after becoming the Union minister, said that connectivity of the Brahmaputra with the Bay of Bengal will be improved for better trade and commerce opportunities.
Besides, the union minister also sought support from every stakeholders to make this possible.
Sonowal said every effort will be made to connect the Barak and Brahmaputra rivers with the Bay of Bengal through Chittagong.
“There are many projects for the Brahmaputra in the pipeline to develop it as a key waterway. We will announce it later,” Sonowal said.
Sonowal, who kicked off BJP’s outreach programme ”Jan Ashirwad Yatra” in the state today stressed that northeast can make advancements in the fields of Ayurveda and traditional medicines, and said that the AYUSH ministry will explore the region’s potential in these sectors.
