The United Nations Human Rights Council letter questioning the NRC process has come under further criticism.

In fact opposing the view of the UNHRC, pro-talk ULFA leader and member of Khilonjia Suraksha Mancha or the Forum on Indigenous Rights Anup Chetia said a team of the Mancha is in Geneva and will raise the issue with the UN body.

Chetia added that the NRC is all about safeguarding the rights of the indigenous people of Assam and has no religious angle as alleged by the UNHRC letter.

The United Nations body had alleged that Bengali Muslims continue to be disproportionately affected and targeted by Foreigners Tribunals as many have been asked to prove their citizenship before Tribunals who according to the United Nations Human Rights Agency lack the necessary means to do so.

The letter also mentions that despite producing required documentation to prove their citizenship before the Tribunal, many Bengali Muslims have been allegedly declared as foreigners based on technical reasons.

Meanwhile, Prabhajan Virodhi Mancha convener Upamanya Hazarika said the UNHRC has come up with the report without coming to Assam and undertaking any studies.

It is a fact that indigenous people are becoming minorities under the weight of Bangladeshi infiltration, so there is no question of any victimization, he said. He pointed out that even the Supreme Court has given three judgments in this regard.
