India has abstained on a US-sponsored UN Security Council resolution that deplores in the strongest terms Russia’s attack against Ukraine.
India said that dialogue is the only answer to settling differences and disputes. India also said that it is a matter of regret that the path of diplomacy was given up and the stakeholders must return to it.
The resolution did not pass since permanent member Russia, which is also the president of the security council for the month of February, used its veto. The resolution received 11 votes in favour and three abstentions, including India, China, and UAE.
It is to be mentioned that the US had pushed India hard to vote in favour of its resolution with secretary of State Anthony Blinken speaking external affairs Minister S Jaishankar impressing on the need for ‘collective response’ against Russia’s actions.
India later issued an explanation on its stance in the UNSC asking the international community to honour ‘priciples of international law and UN Charter as these provies a constructibe way forward.
The statement called for an immidiate cessation of hostilities and respecting the territoral integrity of states. Notably these were the sentiments expressed by Prime Minister in his phone call with Russian President Valdimir Putin
