UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh expressed confidence in the party's candidates, describing them as highly competent and promising.
The United Democratic Party (UDP) has released its third list of candidates for the upcoming District Council elections, scheduled for 21 February.
For the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), the UDP announced Lee Trevor S. Bareh for Jirang Constituency, Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah (sitting MLA) for Sohïong Constituency, and Anthony Khongwang for Nongshken Constituency. In the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC), Meiowan Pasi will contest from Nongbah Mihmyntdu.
UDP President Metbah Lyngdoh expressed confidence in the party’s candidates, describing them as highly competent and promising.
“This time, we are fortunate to have very competent candidates. They are very promising, and this time we are going to give a big surprise to everyone,” Lyngdoh stated.
Lyngdoh affirmed the party’s efforts to secure strong performances, stating, “That’s why the screening of candidates has taken a little time. However, we have made it very clear that the candidates this time are not just to fill up seats.”
He also shared updates on the party’s preparations. “The final list of candidates will be out in a day or two. We have already finalised our manifesto for the District Council polls, and it will be released very soon. We are fielding 22 candidates in KHADC and 17 in JHADC, with the fourth list coming shortly,” Lyngdoh added.
Addressing concerns about the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) contesting separately, Lyngdoh dismissed any impact on UDP’s prospects. He clarified that decisions were made jointly under the RDA alliance.
Referencing the party’s position in the 2023 Assembly elections, where the UDP secured 12 seats in the MDA-1 coalition, Lyngdoh assured supporters that the party’s influence and prospects remain strong in both councils.
