Twelve New Colleges in Meghalaya to Affiliate with State University Amid NEHU Row

He further confirmed that the matter had been resolved following a meeting between state education officials and NEHU representatives.

In the midst of an affiliation dispute between the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and the newly established Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU), twelve newly created colleges in Meghalaya will directly affiliate with CWSSU from the 2025–26 academic session.

Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma has clarified that colleges seeking to affiliate with CWSSU must first formally de-affiliate from NEHU, following due statutory procedure. His clarification came in response to a communication issued by CWSSU’s Registrar to the principals of 22 colleges, informing them that affiliation could not be considered unless official disaffiliation from NEHU was completed.

Sangma said, “It is just to avoid more conflict and complexity with NEHU. Dual affiliation is not allowed, so colleges must first de-affiliate from NEHU before seeking affiliation with CWSSU.”

He further confirmed that the matter had been resolved following a meeting between state education officials and NEHU representatives. As a result, twelve newly established colleges are set to begin their affiliation with the state university.

The Education Minister emphasised that the process must follow the due statutory procedure. “Colleges need to formally de-affiliate from NEHU and then apply for affiliation with CWSSU. This is to ensure that no legal or procedural loopholes emerge in the future,” Sangma added.

However, the transition has sparked concerns among some stakeholders. Eureka F. P. Lyngdoh, President of the Meghalaya College Principals’ Council (MCPC), explained that the earlier decision by some colleges to remain affiliated with NEHU was taken independently. While welcoming the creation of a state university, she pointed out that CWSSU was still in its infancy.

“If the state university is fully equipped with the required departments and academic programmes, we have no objection to affiliation. NEHU is a well-established institution, and our colleges have been affiliated with it for many years. CWSSU is just starting, so it will take time for it to grow and build the necessary infrastructure,” Lyngdoh said.

The establishment of CWSSU marks a significant step in Meghalaya’s higher education policy, aiming to offer a more localised administrative structure for colleges in the state. While the initial phase sees only twelve colleges affiliating with CWSSU, the transition signals a broader shift in the state’s academic landscape, one that will depend on how quickly and effectively the new university can rise to meet expectations.
