The tragedy unfolded after a Maruti Alto car, with 3 people, struck a tea garden worker before plunging into a roadside concrete drain.
In a chilling incident, a youth was allegedly beaten to death by angry villagers after a reckless road accident where he injured one person in the Kalishashan Tea Estate area of the Kailashahar subdivision, under Tripura’s Unakoti district.
The tragedy unfolded after a Maruti Alto car, with three people, struck a tea garden worker before plunging into a roadside concrete drain.
Eyewitnesses reported that the speeding car hit the tea garden worker, identified as Logen Urang, causing him severe injuries, including a fractured leg. As the vehicle crashed, the driver and the other occupants quickly fled into the adjacent tea estate to hide. However, the villagers, infuriated by the incident, pursued and eventually caught hold of the driver.
In an act of mob justice, the youth was allegedly beaten to death. He was later identified as Pradeep Das, a resident of Ratiabari in Kumarghat. His lifeless body was discovered inside the estate. The angry crowd subsequently set the vehicle ablaze. Firefighters from Kailashahar rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire.
A forensic team began its investigation while Pradeep’s body was sent for post-mortem. During this time, another youth who had fled the scene, Nirmal Das from Pecharthal Bazar, emerged from the tea estate and surrendered to police. He was taken to Kailashahar police station for questioning.
According to Nirmal’s statement, three individuals were inside the car—Pradeep Das, who owned and drove the vehicle, Nirmal himself, and a third person, Dipen Debnath of Kumarghat, who remains untraceable.
The violent episode has sparked unrest in the region. District authorities, including Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R., Additional SP L. Vanglima Darlong, SDPO Jayanta Karmakar, and Officer-in-Charge Sukanta Sen Choudhury, along with Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel, arrived at the scene to restore calm.
Police have yet to issue an official statement, but investigations are ongoing into both the fatal assault and the road accident that triggered it.
