Amid the massive crackdown on marijuana plantation in Tripura, leader of Opposition in the Tripura Assembly and TIPRA Motha leader Animesh Debbarma has said that the state government should consider legalizing marijuana cultivation.

Debbarma said that legalizing marijuana cultivation will not only allow the cultivators to earn but also enhance revenue for the state.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live Debbarma said, “I am not in power. If I were a person in power, I would have studied potential economic expansions. This is being used for medical purposes and it can also improve our economy, par capita income in Tripura as well as the entire country then why can not we grow this plant?.”

“We can legalize it. There will be a rise in our revenue. This has to be legaliszd. The legalizing processes of this plant have already started in many states like Manipur,” he added.

It may be mentioned that despite continuous efforts by security agencies over the past five and a half years to eradicate illegal marijuana cultivation in Tripura, the state still grapples with the challenges.

In the last couple of weeks, special operations have been undertaken leading to destruction of illegal marijuana cultivation predominantly in forest areas.
