Tripura Police Arrest Three Bangladeshi Nationals Amid NIA Anti-Terror Operations

First Published: 12th November, 2024 21:47 IST

The GRP has filed charges against the women under the Foreigners Act, the Indian Passport Act, and the BNS Act.

In a significant breakthrough during ongoing anti-terror operations by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), security forces in Tripura apprehended three Bangladeshi nationals on Monday evening at Agartala railway station.

The arrests were the result of a coordinated operation involving the Government Railway Police (GRP), Railway Protection Force (RPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and other law enforcement agencies.

Tapas Das, officer-in-charge of the GRP station in Agartala, confirmed the arrests on Tuesday, revealing that the three women—each from different districts of Bangladesh—had illegally crossed into Tripura a day prior.

According to Das, the women had entered India without valid legal documents, intending to travel to Delhi via the Rajdhani Express. However, sharp-eyed security personnel intercepted them at the station before they could board the train. The trio was subsequently detained for their unlawful entry into India.

The GRP has filed charges against the women under the Foreigners Act, the Indian Passport Act, and the BNS Act. They are set to be produced in court later today. This arrest is part of a larger trend of illegal crossings, with nearly 300 infiltrators, mainly Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas, apprehended at Agartala Railway Station alone this year. Many of these crossings have involved Indian touts facilitating the movement of infiltrators.

Despite a significant effort to secure the border—95% of the 856-kilometre-long boundary between India and Bangladesh is protected with barbed wire—the fencing remains in poor condition in several areas. The central government has plans to replace the rusted fencing in the coming months.

In a related development, the NIA has ramped up its operations targeting suspected Al-Qaeda sympathizers and operatives. On Monday morning, the agency carried out simultaneous raids at nine locations across multiple states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, West Bengal, Bihar, Tripura, and Assam. These operations are part of a broader effort to dismantle networks allegedly run by Bangladeshi nationals aiming to destabilize India.

The NIA’s crackdown in Tripura is particularly critical, as the state shares a porous border with Bangladesh, making it a key area in counterterrorism and border security efforts. The agency’s raids target individuals suspected of providing financial and logistical support to terror outfits, underscoring the importance of continued vigilance along India’s northeastern frontier.
