The Congress leaders also criticized the state election commission and police, accusing it of partisanship and favoring the ruling party.

Ahead of Panchayat polls, the Tripura Congress on Thursday made serious allegations against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of orchestrating attacks on its candidates.

While speaking to media at Congress Bhavan in Agartala, Tripura Pradesh Congress state president, Asish Kumar Saha, along with former Minister and MLA Sudip Roy Barman, alleged that BJP “goons” have been targeting their candidates and Congress supporters since the Panchayat poll date was announced yesterday.

They stated that tension is rising in Tripura ahead of the upcoming Panchayat elections as the ruling BJP, having failed to deliver on its promises to the people, lacks a substantial voter base and is resorting to violence to instil fear and manipulate the election outcome.

However, they emphasized that Congress will firmly resist these tactics and ensure their candidates can contest the election fairly.

The Congress leaders also criticized the state election commission and police, accusing it of partisanship and favouring the ruling party.

“We have been witnessing an unprecedented wave of violence and intimidation against our supporters and candidates,” Saha stated. “This is a blatant attempt by the BJP to undermine the democratic process and intimidate opposition candidates.”

Roy Barman echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for a free and fair electoral process. “The role of the state election commission and police is to ensure impartiality and fairness in the elections. However, their actions suggest a clear bias towards the ruling party,” he said.

The allegations come at a critical time as the Panchayat elections are seen as a litmus test for political parties in the state.

The Congress leaders also criticized the TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and they called for immediate intervention from authorities to ensure the safety of their candidates and a fair electoral process.
