Tripura government is on a mission to mitigate the effects of global warming by increasing forest cover

With global warming setting new records every day, the Tripura government is on a mission to mitigate its effects as far as possible by increasing the state’s forest cover area.

Taking part in a mass plantation drive, Tripura chief minister Dr Manik Saha announced that a new record was set today where 5 lakh seedlings were planted across the state in 5 minutes.

“The mass plantation drive is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clarion call, where he has urged everyone to plant one sapling each after his or her mother’s name,” Chief Minister Saha said while speaking to the media.

The state-level mass plantation drive took place across the state, and one such plantation drive took place at NH 108B near Taranagar, Mohanpur in West Tripura, where Chief Minister Manik Saha, Power Minister Ratanlal Nath, and Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma planted saplings along with others.

“In 2022, we planted around 1 lakh saplings, which increased to 2 lakhs in 2023, and today we have planted 5 lakh saplings. Every MLA, minister, and leader took place in this plantation drive,” Chief Minister Saha added.

Chief Minister Saha added that trees were essential as they protect us from global temperature and extreme heat.

“In our developmental activities and road construction, trees may be cut down, but it is essential to compensate by planting double or triple the number of trees,” Saha stated, emphasizing the importance of environmental sustainability.

Meanwhile, speaking on the occasion, state forest minister Animesh Debbarma announced the ambitious goal of planting 50 lakh saplings over the next few months to increase the state’s forest cover, which has been declining due to deforestation and illegal tree felling.

Additionally, he revealed plans to establish the largest flower park in the region in Tripura.

The drive saw participation from officials of various departments, NGOs, social organizations, schools, and institutions, demonstrating a collective effort towards environmental conservation across Tripura.
