Tripura Forest Dept suffers massive loss of Rs 30-40 cr in Flood; high-tech nurseries, 459 water harvesting structures destroyed

The Forest Department has mobilized a rapid task team to address immediate challenges and work towards recovery.

Tripura’s forest department reported an estimated loss of Rs 30-40 crore due to the recent devastating floods that claimed over 30 lives in the state, Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma said.

Minister Debbarma outlined the extensive destruction caused by the floods and said that 459 water harvesting structures have been destroyed. These structures are crucial for local fisheries and were maintained by Self-Help Groups and Joint Forest Management Committees, providing vital support to rural livelihoods. The damage has compounded the economic hardships faced by affected communities, who are now struggling with both income loss and resource depletion.

In addition to the water structures, the floods completely destroyed several high-tech nurseries essential for ecological balance and reforestation efforts. These nurseries supply saplings for community agro-forestry projects, making their loss particularly concerning.

Minister Debbarma also emphasized the significant damage to staff quarters and offices of the Forest Department, especially in remote areas. Many trees were uprooted or damaged, leading to considerable economic losses for farmers engaged in agro-forestry. This destruction jeopardizes the long-term sustainability of agricultural practices for marginalized and low-income communities reliant on these resources.

In response to this crisis, the Forest Department has mobilized a rapid task team to address immediate challenges and work towards recovery, reflecting a commitment to restoring both the environment and the livelihoods of affected residents.
