The recent catastrophic floods that hit Tripura has damaged 861 educational institutes and the loss is estimated at Rs 262 crore, prompting the government to seek financial assistance from the central government.
Ravel Hemendra Kumar, Special Secretary of the Education Department, during a press conference in Agartala on Sunday, said that the state government has already submitted a formal request to the centre for funds to help rebuild damaged educational facilities across Tripura.
As an immediate aid, a sum of Rs 12 crore from the Chief Minister’s special relief package has been sanctioned with which restoration works are being carried out, Kumar added.
He also informed that till date around 22,000 books have been distributed among affected students who lost their books in the floods.
Despite the widespread destruction caused by the floods, all schools and colleges in Tripura have resumed normal operations. Many educational institutions, which were temporarily converted into shelters for flood-affected victims, are now back to functioning normally.
“The attendance rate in these institutions has also recovered, ranging from 70% to 80%. At present, no schools or colleges are being used as shelter houses. All institutions are functioning normally,” Kumar said.
The recent flood is regarded as one of the worst in several decades, ravaging much of the state and resulting in an overall damage estimated to be around Rs 15,000 crore. At least 36 lives were lost, and thousands of families were displaced, with homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods severely impacted.
The education sector was among the hardest-hit, with several schools and colleges suffering extensive structural damage. Officials have expressed hope that with central assistance, the state will be able to expedite the rehabilitation of these institutions and restore normalcy to the education system.
