In a significant development, as many as 10 leaders including former TMC state president and Congress general secretary joined the ruling BJP in Tripura today ahead of the upcoming 2024 General Elections, as well as the Village Council Election in the state.
Leaders from TMC who joined BJP are–Former TMC state president Ashish Lal Singh, TMC Assembly Election candidate Koheli Das, TMC Secretary Krishankanta Debnath, Biswanath Ghosh, and Swpandeep Chakraborty.
From Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee, general secretary Prasanta Bhattacharjee, Sudharsan Majumder, Rajib Das and Asish Deb joined the ruling BJP.
Surajit Bhattacharya, a member of the CITU state committee, also joined the BJP.
They joined BJP in the presence of BJP leader and Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Sushanta Chowdhury, BJP state President Rajib Bhattacharya, and General Secretary Amit Rakhsit in a ceremony held at the BJP headquarters in Agartala.
On being asked why he joined BJP, Ashish Lal Singh, the son of late Sachindra Lal Singh, Tripura’s first Chief Minister expressed his dissatisfaction with TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee and accused her of ignoring the state’s citizens.
Singh revealed that even former Chief Minister Sudhir Ranjan Majumder, who established the TMC in Tripura, was disappointed when he failed to meet Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata even after waiting for a week but she did not turn up.
Singh also questioned the worthiness of the people of Tripura in Mamata Banerjee’s eyes, citing her lack of accessibility during visits to the state.
Singh also criticized the TMC for not contesting from all 60 seats during the last assembly election, alleging that the party favoured other political entities.
He stated that this decision was unacceptable to local TMC leaders in the state. Although he refrained from naming the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Congress, which were once Mamata Banerjee’s main opponents in West Bengal, Singh hinted at their involvement in the matter.
Welcoming them into the party, Minister Chowdhury urged people who are associated with Congress and the Communist party to join BJP in the near future.
DGP Sharma, informed that the two accused have gone underground after the crime.
