The committee will consider various actions, including the possibility of providing government jobs to the affected families

In a significant development, Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha announced on Wednesday the establishment of a committee aimed at assessing measures to support the family members of individuals who lost their lives in political violence in the state. The committee will consider various steps, including the possibility of providing government jobs to the affected families.
Chief Minister Saha made this announcement during his visit to the residence of Tapan Bhowmik, a deceased BJP leader who succumbed to his injuries following an alleged attack by CPIM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) members on March 5, soon after the announcement of the assembly election results.
During his visit, Chief Minister Saha, along with Rajib Bhattacharjee, BJP state president of Tripura, personally handed over a check of Rs. 2 lakh to the grieving family on behalf of the ruling party. He addressed the press after the visit, stating, “It is widely known that he was brutally assaulted by individuals associated with the Communist party when the assembly election results were declared on March 2 this year. The police are actively investigating the matter, and the suspects have obtained anticipatory bail. Our party and the government will closely monitor the situation.”
Chief Minister Saha also mentioned that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) offers Rs. 2 lakh as compensation to the families of those who have lost their lives due to political violence. Accordingly, the funds were disbursed to the bereaved family on this day. He added, “The disbursement of this money got delayed, but we have handed them the check today. As for those responsible for this crime, they will not be allowed to escape justice at any cost. We are also considering the possibility of providing a government job to a member of the affected family.”
Taking account of the government’s initiative in this regard, he explained, “In yesterday’s cabinet meeting, we formed a committee to review the available options for supporting the relatives of individuals who lose their lives in such political violence. Once the appropriate criteria are established, we will take the necessary steps.”
The Tripura government introduced a victim’s compensation act in 2018 to provide assistance to families who have suffered due to violence, assaults, mob violence, and similar incidents.
While the ruling BJP has accused the opposition CPIM and Congress parties of perpetrating political violence against its supporters, the CPIM and Congress parties have likewise accused the saffron party of attacking their leaders and members since the announcement of the election results.
