Tripura CM Manik Saha Concerned As State Ranks 4th Among NE States in HIV/AIDS Cases

First Published: 3rd March, 2025 9:44 IST

The Chief Minister asserted that legislation alone is not enough to tackle drug abuse and the HIV/AIDS crisis.

The number of HIV/AIDS cases in Tripura has surged past 10,000, reaching an “alarming situation,” Chief Minister Manik Saha cautioned on Sunday.

Speaking at the 20th annual conference of the Tripura Retired Doctors’ Association in Agartala, Saha stressed the urgent need to raise awareness about the disease and address drug addiction, as needle-sharing among drug users remains a major reason for the rapid spread of HIV in the state.

The Chief Minister, who also holds the health portfolio, urged politicians and leaders of various organizations to openly discuss the connection between drug abuse and HIV/AIDS to help curb its rise. He revealed that Tripura now ranks fourth among North Eastern states in terms of HIV/AIDS prevalence.

Saha also underscored the need for medical professionals to take extra precautions while treating patients, particularly in the use of syringes, to prevent further transmission.

He pointed out that government initiatives have contributed to a decline in HIV/AIDS cases among intravenous drug users compared to previous years. However, he emphasized the necessity for stronger monitoring and innovative strategies to identify and support drug addicts before they fall victim to the disease.

The Chief Minister asserted that legislation alone is not enough to tackle drug abuse and the HIV/AIDS crisis. Instead, he called for broader societal participation, urging communities, families, and institutions to work together to prevent the further spread of the disease.
