In a landmark achievement, Tripura conducted its first successful kidney transplant surgery on July 8, becoming the third state in the region to reach this medical milestone, after Assam and Manipur.
The intricate six-and-a-half-hour surgery took place at the main referral hospital, AGMC and GBP Hospital at Agartala, in collaboration with Shija Hospital from Imphal.
A highly experienced 13-member team, led by Surgeon Dr. Somorendro P., Dr. Mahele, and nephrologist Dr. Guliver, along with other doctors and the OT team from Manipur, worked alongside local doctors including Dr. Bijit Lodh, Dr. Manas Gope, Dr. Mukut Debnath, and Dr. Somoresh Paul.
The surgical team successfully transplanted a kidney from Munna Saha Sutradhar to her 20-year-old son, Subham Sutradhar.
During a press conference, the medical team, along with GBP Hospital’s Medical Superintendent Sankar Chakraborty, hailed the procedure as a significant medical achievement for Tripura.
They credited Chief Minister Manik Saha, a dental surgeon, for his vision of transforming Tripura into a medical hub.
To support this vision, Tripura signed a memorandum of understanding(MoU) with Shija Hospital of Imphal, which provided the surgery at a nominal cost and offered training to local doctors until they become proficient in performing such procedures independently.
The entire medical team expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Manik Saha for his dedicated efforts, which they believe paved the way for this historic medical success in the state.
