Toong-Naga Road Reopens After a Year, Tourists Flock to North Sikkim

First Published: 3rd December, 2024 14:04 IST

As of today, 717 tourists have visited, accompanied by 123 vehicles, signalling a positive recovery for the region’s tourism sector.

The reopening of the Toong-Naga road on December 1 has marked a significant turning point for North Sikkim, with the region seeing a surge in tourist arrivals.

As of today, 717 tourists have visited, accompanied by 123 vehicles, signalling a positive recovery for the region’s tourism sector. Of these visitors, 691 were domestic tourists, including 472 males, 184 females, and 35 children.

Notably, 118 vehicles were booked online, while a handful of offline bookings accounted for 3 male visitors and 1 vehicle. Additionally, 23 foreign tourists, comprising 20 males and 3 females, visited, using 4 vehicles.

This inflow emphasises the importance of the reopened road, which has not only restored vital connectivity but also breathed new life into local tourism, providing a much-needed boost to the region’s economy.

The recovery is especially remarkable given the devastation caused by the flash flood on October 4, 2023, triggered by an outburst from South Lhonak Lake, situated at 5,245 meters. The disaster severely impacted four districts, damaging infrastructure and causing the Teesta Urja hydel dam at Chungthang to explode.

Over 88,000 people were affected, and nearly 100 towns and villages, including Chungthang and Lachen, were hit. In Mangan district, at least 33 bridges and extensive roads were damaged. Despite these challenges, the renewed flow of tourists signals hope for North Sikkim’s recovery and future growth.
