Tipra Motha Turns Up the Heat: Demands Centre Act on TIPRASA Accord, Village Elections, and 125th Amendment

Another crucial demand put forth by the Tipra Motha Party is the urgent need to hold Village Committee elections.

In a major political move, the Tipra Motha Party stepped up its pressure on the BJP-led Tripura government and the central authorities by submitting memoranda to Block Development Officers (BDOs) across the state on Thursday.

The memoranda, addressed to the Governor of Tripura, Indrasena Reddy Nallu, listed three primary demands, the full implementation of the TIPRASA Accord, the immediate conduct of Village Committee elections, and the prompt passage of the 125th Amendment to the Indian Constitution.

Tipra Motha emphasized that the Tiprasa Accord, a historic tripartite agreement signed on March 2, 2024, between the Government of India, the Government of Tripura, and TIPRA, was established to resolve persistent concerns of Tripura’s indigenous communities. Covering a broad range of issues, the accord seeks to safeguard tribal history, land rights, economic development, and the preservation of identity, culture, and language.

Despite the formation of a Joint Working Group/Committee and an initial meeting held in New Delhi on September 20, 2024, Motha leaders expressed frustration over the slow progress in implementing the accord. They insist that intervention from the Governor is critical to expedite the process and fulfill the commitments made without further delay. “The Governor’s intervention is essential to ensure these promises are kept,” said Tipra Motha MLA Biswajit Kaloi while submitting the memorandum at Jampuijala.

Another crucial demand put forth by the Tipra Motha Party is the urgent need to hold Village Committee elections. The last elections were conducted in 2016, with terms expiring in 2021. However, unlike other elections held in the state, including Municipal, Assembly, and Parliamentary elections, the Village Committee elections have been indefinitely delayed.

The absence of these local governing bodies, vital for grassroots administration and direct implementation of welfare schemes, has created a governance vacuum in tribal areas. “This delay has impeded democratic participation and stalled development projects in rural tribal regions. It is essential that these elections are held promptly to restore effective local governance,” stated the memorandum.

The third significant demand included in the memorandum calls for the urgent passage of the 125th Amendment to the Indian Constitution. This amendment aims to empower tribal communities by granting them greater autonomy in the administration of tribal areas, thus improving their socio-economic and political rights.

The Tipra Motha’s statewide deputation campaign comes shortly after a high-level strategy meeting led by Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, along with MLAs, district council representatives, senior leaders, and heads of various affiliated organizations.
