Thousands of people took to the streets in Thoubal district today to protest against illegal immigrants in Manipur. Some estimates say the number of protestors could be 50,000 or more.

The protest, spearheaded by the Nongpok Lallup Meitrabak, an apex body of clubs and organizations in the district, began at the Thoubal Haokha Ground, where the protestors marched to the DC office in Thoubal Athokpam. The protestors submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the DC. Notably, the memorandum cited a 15-point charter of demands, which include protection of Manipur’s integrity, deportation of illegal immigrants with NRC implementation, inclusion of Meitei in the ST list, and scrapping of the suspension of operation with a few Kuki militant groups, among others. Speaking to Northeast Live, one of the convenors of Nongpok Lallup Meitrabak said that if the DC fails to forward the memorandum to the Prime Minister, then another bigger rally will be conducted soon.
