Despite representing India on an international platform, Singamayum is struggling to meet her ends meet
Meet Singamayum Tajbanu of Manipur. A young talent fighting with her fate to overcome her dreams. Her story is no less than an inspiration to many.
Singamayum Tajbanu has just won the Jeet Kune Do champion title by clinching a gold medal in the 60 kg senior women’s category at the recent 2nd World Jeet Kune Do Championship 2023, held at the Provincial Sports Complex, Kandy, Sri Lanka, from March 10 to 12.
Despite representing India on an international platform, Singamayum is struggling to meet her ends.
Singamayum lives with her parents and her three younger siblings. Her father, Md. Manou, is a retired CRPF havildar. The pension money that her father receives is not enough to cater to the needs of the family and at the same time provide for her to pursue a career in the field of sports.
To support her family and her dreams, Singamayum weaves the delicate “Rani Phi” (an important Manipuri women’s traditional attire) till midnight to earn extra money and support herself in striving towards her “Olympic Dream.”
Heart melting isn’t it?
Not just this, she has another feather in her cap. Singamayum is also a qualified judge for Jeet Kune Do, both at the national and international levels.
Interestingly, Tajbanu also plays karate and is pursuing a master’s in political science at Dhanamanjuri University in Imphal as well.
In an exclusive conversation with Northeast Live, the 24-year-old shared her struggles as she strives towards her dream to win gold at the Olympics.
Tajbanu’s father, Md. Manou, shared that his desire is for his daughter to continue serving the nation by bringing name and fame to the country in the field of sports.
After sustaining injuries in a blast during the Kargil War, Manou retired from the CRPF.
Singamayum father also drew the attention of the government to providing a suitable government job to her daughter so that the family can be a little relieved from the financial burden, thereby allowing Tajbanu to primarily focus on serving the nation through sports.
