In a landmark verdict, The Supreme Court today upheld the constitutional validity of Aadhar Card.

However it ruled that Aadhar is not mandatory for opening bank accounts and getting mobile connection.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday made it clear that Aadhaar data will not be mandatory for opening bank accounts or for getting a mobile phone connection.

The apex court said that the Centre must bring a robust data protection law urgently.

A five-judge constitutional bench under Chief Justice of India, Chief Justice Dipak Mishra, struck down Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act that allowed private entities to ask for Aadhaar details for mobile phone connections or for opening bank accounts.

Aadhaar card will be mandatory for PAN linking, Income Tax returns, to avail welfare schemes and govt subsidies and no one can be denied of govt benefits if he/she does not posses Aadhaar card.

Whereas, it is not mandatory to link bank accounts and mobile connections. Aadhaar card is not mandatory for CBSE, NEET, UGC and school admissions.
